For Preschool Students with Disabilities

The Preschool Program is for students identified as eligible for special education and related services. Classes meet Monday through Friday for either morning or afternoon sessions. There is also an extended day program available for students in need of a program based on the principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis. Instruction is based on the Creative Curriculum for Preschool, which uses a child center-based approach designed to promote social interaction, play, motor, communication, and cognitive development. Preschool teachers provide developmentally appropriate activities emphasizing each child's area(s) of strength and need. Each child is engaged in a  multidimensional learning environment that combines instruction and play to create a foundation for future academic and personal success. Learning centers are utilized to promote creative play, motor skills, communication, and cognitive development. Daily activities and tasks include music and song, arts and crafts, computer learning and fun, pretend play, and activities related to seasonal projects, field trips, self-care and socialization. The use of augmentative, assistive technology and structured learning strategies enhances the development of each child. Preschool classroom are supported with the help of paraprofessionals.

Physical Education, Art, Music, and Media Center instruction is provided by appropriately certified teachers who work collaboratively with the Preschool classroom teachers to support and enhance the curriculum.

The Preschool Program is supported by a staff of speech/Language Specialists, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists who provide therapeutic intervention in accordance with each child's Individualized Education Plan. A registered school nurse is also on site to address medical emergencies and provide daily nursing services.

Parent education programs offered by the preschool staff focus on parent-child interactions, specific areas of interest families have regarding child development and opportunities for families to get together to discuss mutual concerns are also provided throughout the school year. Parental participation is key to this program and is strongly encouraged.

Parents are also encouraged to volunteer in the program and attend classes and therapy sessions to directly participate in their child's developmental growth. Parents will have the opportunity to learn useful techniques from the staff that they can use at home.

Transportation for special education preschool students is provided on a home to school basis. Safety restraints are utilized appropriate to each child's need.
